Redemptive vs. Ethical Business

We held our second virtual summit this year on Nov. 2-3, 2020, gathering together our Western-based partners with our Asia-based fellows and staff for two days of discussion and learning.

Redemptive vs. Ethical Business

One of the main themes of this summit was an exploration of the differences between ethical business, which is increasingly popular today, and redemptive entrepreneurship, which goes even farther and is much more challenging to implement.

While ethical businesses visibly do what is necessary in order to be respected, redemptive businesses are motivated to do what is essential, even if their impact is hidden. The redemptive business leader is accountable to a higher standard. Theirs is a calling, an inspired work.

"Often, ethical business focuses on doing the minimum required. Redemptive business focuses on creating the maximum blessing."
— Sean Tuckey, JoyCorps Business Coach

Redemptive Investing

We also talked about how redemptive investing is different from traditional investing. Redemptive investing, just like redemptive entrepreneurship, requires that traditional value systems are adjusted to match with deeper realities of what is good and true. In other words, the truth is different from what is typically projected (for example, what success looks like). We must change our minds and hearts to match the truth.

One of our investor mentors explained how redemptive investors are called to an "upside-down" approach when reviewing their values: "Most investors look for how they can get the quickest and biggest return. Redemptive investors have to consider the reality that our returns will look much different: slow, intentional, holistic."
